Feeling Bad about What You Ate Today?

Don't.

At the gym yesterday, I overheard this guy divulging the day's food intake to his gym buddy. He was watching his friend do sit-ups, while sitting on a big yoga ball, practically resting his chin on his own belly. This is what he said he'd eaten.

Denny's breakfast (eggs and pancakes)
2 Double chocolate chip muffins
1 "big slice" of raisin cake
Pepperoni slices
1 handful of almonds

This was everything he'd eaten by 2pm. Prefaced with the fact that he was at a work seminar, where they served the evil muffins and everything after.

I couldn't help snickering at the handful of almonds.

As Americans, I think it's our duty to feel like shit for enjoying ourselves. Especially from a culinary perspective. But how many of us actually overdo it?

Fat and lazy is caused by the quality of food we eat, not the quantity.

Bulk Bins, Not Bread Lines

As an anal retentive Scrooge, the vegan lifestyle often chafes the hell outta me. It's expensive! Veggie burgers cost five bucks a box. A bag of spring mix pushes three dollars. Usually I shell it out, thinking of my health.

Lately, I got no money! Anyone else? A show of hands? Who has money?

To get by, I've wracked my brain for cheap vegan alternatives. The next few posts are dedicated to our dying economy. And you. May you get by.

FIRST... WHERE TO SHOP!

The Bulk Bin

Does your grocery store have a bulk bin? If not, find one that does! The bulk bin offers grains, beans, spices, cereals and nuts - cheaper, due to the lack of packaging.

Local Farms and Markets

Many local farms and markets sell nearly expired veggies at low prices. Today, I found a huge sack of potatoes, a head of romaine lettuce, a bag of mushrooms, a head of purple cabbage, costing A DOLLAR EACH. Can't eat a sack of almost expired poe-tots that quickly? Make an enormous batch of potato soup and freeze it.

Join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)

If you join a CSA, you meet local farmers and they hook you up with fresh veggies for a flat rate throughout the season. Find yours here!
