There it is! I wrote the letter. Actually - I wrote it a few weeks ago.
I'm not your typical client.
I'm vegan. I'm gluten-free. I don't eat refined sugar. I eat vegetables, legumes, and whole grains at nearly every meal. I do yoga three times a week, and on alternate days, I am on the ellipticals at my local gym.Why am I writing you this letter?I have IBS-C.According to your book, "Gillian McKeith's Food Bible," if I exercise and follow a diet of vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains, I should NOT have IBS-C. But I do. I have it pretty bad. Many days, my stomach refuses to digest food. I get very bloated from the smallest amounts of food. I can't eat.
Despite working out and being vegan for the past five years, I have lost little weight. I have had a lot of trouble gaining muscle mass. Something is wrong.
Sometimes, I get very weak and dizzy. Last week, I drove through two stop signs, completely delirious. My life is at stake here, Gillian. While I have implemented some of your tricks - drinking vegetable juice and smoothies to keep me from malnutrition - I do still have IBS-C. This tells me that I must be doing something wrong. There must be something making me sick.As you know, the health care system in America leaves many sick people uninsured. I am one of those people.
I am an adjunct English professor. I am not given insurance through any of the colleges that employ me. Yet, I work just as many hours as a full time professor. In the past, when I have splurged and gone to doctors, they have been unanimous in their diagnoses. IBS, yes. Celiac, no.
This doesn't help my bloated belly. Can you help my bloated belly?
I am inviting you to the US. Please come visit and help me find balance. I have many nutrition-Nazi, vegan, gluten-free IBS friends; we are all desperate for some insight on our condition.
Sincerely,
FartyGirl
Lately, I've been wondering if I should send it.

Starting a food diary really highlighted some of my problem foods. Soy is a big one. So is sugar and nuts.
Food combining seems to be very important as well. One of my favorite lunches - cauliflower and nut butter - leaves me feeling sick. But mixed green salad with pumpkin seed cheese? No problem.
(Photo Coming after Today's Lunch of Said Salad)
Go figure!
It appears that the simpler the meal, the better off I am.
Another trick I learned - just last week - came from the lovely Saxifrage. Her doctor suggested she start a rotation diet. Simply put, it's making sure to eat a variety of foods on a regular basis.
Switching it up has REALLY helped! Thanks, Sax!
When it comes to nutrition, here is what I did learn from Gillian.
Eat energizing foods in the morning, like foods filled with B-vitamins. These include eggs, brussel sprouts, quinoa, asparagus, fish, nuts, shittake mushrooms, lentils, adzuki beans and sunflower seeds. These foods all help tone the nervous system too. That's something us IBSsers need a lot of help with!
Foods with iron are also good to eat in the morning. These are nori, lentils, kidney beans, watercress, kale, apricots, figs, prunes, nettles, dulse, kelp, parsley, amaranth, quinoa and beets. Veggie sushi breakfast, anyone?
Liver stagnation causes IBS, PMS and hormone irregularity. This is one reason why IBSsers are told to not drink. So don't drink alcohol! Consume foods and herbs that get bile flowing to the liver, like dandelion, globe artichokes, and milk thistle.
Zinc helps tone the liver as well. Foods containing a lot of zinc are pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, nori, eggs, kelp, brown rice, and tahini.
Eat brazil nuts! They have tons of selenium, which aids against aging and takes good care of your skin and hair.
For PMS, eat lots of fiber to remove old estrogens. Leafy greens and seeds contain the magnesium, calcium, and B-vitamins to help balance hormones. Spirulina, chlorella, and blue-green algae help PMS as well.
For constipation, drink a mango smoothie every morning. Eat figs, prunes, flax, apples, carrots, pumpkin, pine nuts, leafy green vegetables, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and raw hemp seeds. Herbs like nettle, dandelion, fenugreek, and slippery elm will also get things moving. (I've had lots of success with licorice and fennel, too). Ultimately - YOU MUST EXERCISE if you have chronic constipation.
For IBS, drink lots of vegetable juice (NOT V8 - real vegetable juice!). This will give you proper nutrients when your digestion is not working properly. Fiber-rich foods are your best bet.
Summary
Gillian's plan is a lot like the Fat Flush Plan.
Both stress that toning the liver is crucial to keeping the body working properly.
Without a churning liver, the body can't function.
Forget having enough energy to get out of bed in the morning.
Forget digesting food! It ain't happening without your liver!

Major ailment?
*Normally I'd say bloating and stomach pain. Lately, it's headaches.
Are you an IBSser?
*Yep
A dieter?
*Mmm...In a healthy, I try to maintain my weight kind of way. Not in a restrictive obsessive way, if I can help it!
Do you suffer trouble with hormones?
*Arg. PMS.
When you eat, what part of your body are you looking to heal or help?
*My stomach and poor head.
What foods make you feel good?
*??? These days, who knows. Sweet potatoes seem to be fine. I do best with not mixing a lot of food groups, but I LOVE mixing my food.
What foods don't make you feel so good?
*Sadly nut butters, dairy, sugar, gluten
What's your eating schedule look like?
*I try to eat 3 meals and 2-3 snacks a day. I've tried to rotate my foods, but I find it really difficult because it requires so much more preparing and cooking.
Are there certain foods that you prefer at certain times?
*I would prefer sweet carbs every day all day, but I try to limit that to breakfast.
What is your favorite nutritious food to eat?
*That would have to be sweet potatoes again. Ooh, and artichokes. And your carrot and avocado sushi looks really good too!
Ooooh thanks for such great answers Iris!!!
What is your major ailment? I have been feeling better these days but my major ailment has been my continuous stomach problems.
Are you an IBSser? Doctors say I am? I say that is a catch-all diagnosis.
A dieter? No.
Do you suffer trouble with hormones? I don't think so?
When you eat, what part of your body are you looking to heal or help? My stomach...always!
What foods make you feel good? Carbs like rice and eggs.
What foods don't make you feel so good? Too much fiber.
What's your eating schedule look like? Are there certain foods that you prefer at certain times? I am trying to switch up my meals as you are...I realize that on vacation my stomach felt best because I wasn't eating the same things! But I eat 3 meals a day and rarely snack.
What is your favorite nutritious food to eat? Think of something super-healthy, but something that you love. I like to may sugar free oatmeal cookies. Easy, simple, and they hit the spot when I need something dessert-like.
Yay! A new farty post!
Send the dang letter!! What's the worst that could happen...she makes an appearance on your doorstep in that outfit with a whip?
Or would that be wicked awesome?! :D
What is your major ailment? bloating
1-Are you an IBSser? used to be IBS-C before I learned how eating fat is a good thing.
After that was taken care of just your typical bloating and severe "I think I'm dying sharp stomach cramps" from gluten and eggs.
2-A dieter? No
3-Do you suffer trouble with hormones? Well, technically vitamin D is a hormone and I haven't been getting enough. So, yeah, sort of. And I'm a premenstrual monster right now :(
4-When you eat, what part of your body are you looking to heal or help? Definitely intestines. Years of gluten induced damage needs to be healed.
5-What foods make you feel good? Fats:avocado, peanut butter, coconut.
6-What foods don't make you feel so good? dairy (except yogurt),gluten, eggs, casein. and something in one of the Oskri bars I had. Totally did some hurt on me. Gotta figure out which ingredient it was. I'm thinking chicory root extract maybe.
7-What's your eating schedule look like? breakfast: same time, same place, same thing daily. Rest of the day, I graze.
Are there certain foods that you prefer at certain times?
sweet in the morning.
What is your favorite nutritious food to eat? Think of something super-healthy, but something that you love.
peanut butter :)
I agree; send the letter! Maybe she can come and deliver us all from dietary distress with her shiny cat woman outfit!
This post is so chock full of excellent advice; thank you! I've never even heard of "liver toning" before, but I do drink dandelion tea ;-) Oh, and I just had my follow-up with that doctor... I'll be posting soon to share his insight and my take on the whole thing...
And now, to follow the trend here (this reminds me of those old myspace surveys from long ago):
What is your major ailment?
HEADACHES! And strange bouts of swelling and skin breakouts... The tummy does trouble me, but not as much as it did before I eliminated dairy.
Are you an IBSser?
Not sure... I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). At the time (2003), IBS issues were a part of that diagnosis.
A dieter? Dieting doesn't work! I dieted obsessively for years, and it always led to binge-eating and gaining more than I lost via the diet.
Do you suffer trouble with hormones? Same as Iris... PMS!
When you eat, what part of your body are you looking to heal or help? Hmm... good question. I'm mostly just looking to feel nourished and not have any weird reactions when I eat. I'm only just beginning to learn about the healing properties of certain foods.
What foods make you feel good? Chocolate! And starchy, serotonin-producing foods in general. Although, there are some fruits and veggies, like apples, avocados, potatoes, and portobello mushrooms, that really hit the spot, too.
What foods don't make you feel so good? Wheat, gluten, dairy, anything with added chemicals and preservatives in it...
What's your eating schedule look like? Pretty consistent... Light but nutrient-dense breakfast in the morning, midmorning snack, light lunch (usually a salad or some such nonsense), a well-balanced dinner followed by dessert, and usually a snack before bed. I have a tendency to snack too much at night when I'm bored or stressed, though.
Are there certain foods that you prefer at certain times? Chocolate! PMS time especially... and it has to be dark (above 65% cacao).
What is your favorite nutritious food to eat? I'm with Iris on this one, too: potatoes! Especially sweet potatoes, baked and with plenty of Earth Balance buttery spread. I actually saw a recipe of hers that I'm dying to try: Whipped Sweet Potatoes with Cashew Cream. Yum!
I don't know who Jillian is and, frankly, I'm not a fan of her outfit but HELL YEAH you should send the letter!
My major ailment is thyroid (Hashi's) and hormones (migraines). Yes, I've always been a dieter because when I wasn't dieting, I was overeating. Now I eat low-sugar, low carbs and my weight is stable in a range that I'm not freaking out over when I have lots of other stuff to worry about. My eating is stable so I don't have to spend time beating myself up about eating a whole box of .....
I was just thinking I might do my naturopath's liver cleanse in the next couple of weeks. Will have to dig that out.
Great post, FG!
I say send the letter! I too have had Dr.s say IBS - yes and Celiac - no. When it comes to treatment they say you'll have good days and bad days - basically just deal and here's some useless pain pills that won't help (but probably hurt!) you.
Major ailment?
CONSTIPATION!!! Farting and bloating too, but the constipation is the worst
Are you an IBSser?
IBS-C ya you know me :(
A dieter?
Well: No gluten, no caffine, no sugar, no alchol, no dairy, no red meat
I do eat some chicken and fish, so I'm not vegan - I tried it but I felt worse, no energy
Do you suffer trouble with hormones?
My constipation always seems to get extra bad around PMS time
When you eat, what part of your body are you looking to heal or help?
My tummy and my bum
What foods make you feel good?
If only I knew, and keeping a food journal hasn't helped much. Leafy green seem to be okay, but they don't keep satisfied long, and as far as the constipation a whole bag of prunes doesn't even touch it!
What foods don't make you feel so good?
Dairy - even yogurt :(, eating almond butter is like eating cement, eggs seem to be pretty bad too
What's your eating schedule look like?
Three meals with 1-2 snacks in between, nothing after dinner. Lots of water all day long, no other liquids except water and herbal tea
Are there certain foods that you prefer at certain times?
I usually like something sweet (fruit sweetened) in the morning, but cutting out sugar has gotten rid of most of my cravings
What is your favorite nutritious food to eat?
Whatever is fresh at the farmer's market - right now asparagus, swiss chard, and strawberries!
TMI? :)
I left the previous comment - "alfred" is my husband and I didn't realize that my computer was signed into his account - haha, bet you were confused about the PMS part!
Fantastic advice in this post, I copied it all into my notebook.
I'm going to dissent on the sending of the letter. McKeith will not be able to tell you anything you haven't tried already. Her advice is no different than all the other nutrition gurus out there, and so far, none of that has worked to help IBS, as far as I can see. What's needed is some indepth research into the causes. I'm starting to think it might be something to do with low enzyme production. But possibly not liver issues, as I thought mine was crap (I have permanent dark circle under my eyes which apparently means sluggish liver) but I have perfect liver function. Still, looking after one's liver is no bad thing!
As for me, my ailment is IBS-C, and was dysmenorrhea. I currently have piles because of the constipation. Yuck.
Yes, I have IBS-C, currently fairly good though, since stopping gluten, I don't really fart (ok, maybe a few times a day, whereas before 10 minutes wouldn't go by with me tooting).
I don't diet now, but I used to a bit. I'm now at my happy weight.
I did suffer major hormones problems, but the dysmenorrhea has cleared up. My periods have kind of stopped though (I just get one every now and again, and it's much less painful). But I do get depressed before it comes.
I wanna heal my misbehaving bowels. Everything else is great.
Feel good foods- quinoa, fruit, dark chocolate, rice, raw veggies. I'm not really eating much else at the moment.
Bad foods for Dukka Girl- dairy, gluten, nuts, potatoes.
Eating schedule- fruit or grain based brekkie, banana and maybe some small carby thing mid morning, lunch is an apple and a salad- always with a protein food of some description, usually hummus, quinoa or toasted seeds, then vegetabley grainy dinner and almost always dessert (usually dark chocolate).
My only time of the day based choice is I try to eat fruit in the morning, although I usually start my lunch with an apple. That's always the last fruit of the day though.
Loved your post!!
have you considered seeing a naturopathic dr? they often see things that a regular MD doesnt. i had a friend who was very ill for about 2 years. drs told her she had everything under the sun including cancer...after a few visits with a naturopathic dr they diagnosed her with candidiasis...im considering going to one also...so much better than hearing "i dont know"
Wow, I have the EXACT same problems you do and have done all the same things. My diet is very simliar, clean, vegan, etc. I've tried supplements, I've tried food combining, more/ less fiber, more water, more/ less/ different kinds of exercise. I just can't figure it out, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and most of the time I look like I have a giant alien baby growing inside me. I'm so tired of it. I have good insurance but I've gone the doctor route so many times only to find that none of them can help me, or I'm misdiagnosed, or they try to give me funky medications that don't do anything.
I'm so tired of it! It's uncomfortable, painful, embarrassing, and is really keeping me from living a full life at this point, and honestly, I feel kind of insane and stressed most of the time.
Sorry for going off on a rant! But I really hope she responds and comes to the US to help you. You should definitely not have to live like this, and if she helps you, I'll follow every piece of advice you can share with me :)
Thanks for blogging about this!
What is your major ailment?
I've been diagnosed with IBS (alternating D&C), PMDD, bi-patello femoral syndrome & hyperextension (my kneecaps are in the wrong places and my knees bend backwards - fun at parties but grosses people out), scoliosis and fibromyalgia.
Holy shit, I'm kind of amazed I'm functioning, hehe!
Are you an IBSser?
Yep.
A dieter?
I spent about 18 years anorexic, 5ish years bulimic and now I just try to eat without hating myself.
Do you suffer trouble with hormones?
Hell yes. PMDD is the catch-all term for it, but I think it's because I've got ovaries.
When you eat, what part of your body are you looking to heal or help?
My stomach, because what happens there affects every other part of me.
What foods make you feel good?
I'm still trying to narrow that down; it changes minute by minute.
What foods don't make you feel so good?
Meat, dairy, eggs, wheat. I haven't had meat in 18 years, dairy/eggs in 12? years, wheat in a month. Aside from those? Anything acidic or complicated.
What's your eating schedule look like? Are there certain foods that you prefer at certain times?
i start each day with a big ol' glass of water and go from there. No set schedule or menu, since my dietary needs are a crapshoot. Literally and figuratively.
What is your favorite nutritious food to eat? Think of something super-healthy, but something that you love.
Dates. I'm still unsure if they're doing me more harm than good, but they taste awesome and I haven't noticed any anger from the Tummy Goddess as of yet.
I so think that you should send the letter. Have you ever thought about trying to contact her via Twitter?
Love the picture of you stretching.
I don't like to say that I'm on a diet although many describe it that way. I like to use Bob Greene's lingo: a way of eating for life...
Do you read this guy? You should:

Great post girl! Love your letter to Gillian.
Yes we suffer from hormonal problems but each day we feel we are getting better. Eating lots of green smoothies and dark leafy greens helps us. Also fermented foods has helped our stomachs a lot!!! And we rotate our foods often.
Pure2Raw Twins
I'm sorry to hear about all your troubles.
I have IBS-C as well and I was at my wit's end a few years ago. It was just a nightly hell.
I tried raw food, I tried vegan. I ate more fiber and drank more water than a person could stand.
I finally accidentally ran across Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live program. You can google it for information (ETL is a book, btw). But, basically you eat no added salt, no oil, no processed foods and you're required to eat two pounds of non-starchy vegetables and at least four fruits every day.
At first, it was difficult to figure out what to eat and the food was bland, but I figured out how to flavour with things like hot peppers and smoked paprika and Mrs. Dash, etc. Now, it's second nature.
I was of normal weight already, but I lost some weight. The best thing is that after a couple of weeks, my stomach settled down and the IBS went away (I actually have the D problem from time to time - but, if you've ever had prolonged C, a little D is totally better).
I'm not affiliated with ETL in any way, but I thought it might be something that will help you as it helped me. Plus, the downside is that you eat A LOT of vegetables. Hardly a downside.
What is your major ailment?
IBS-C.
Are you an IBSser?
Yup.
A dieter?
Slimming diets? No. Life is for the strong, not the frail and skinny. To be strong you need to feed your body.
Do you suffer trouble with hormones?
High fatigue levels prior to menstruation, IBS also aggravated at this time.
When you eat, what part of your body are you looking to heal or help?
My tumbly.
What foods make you feel good?
Oysters. Liver, iron pills, lots of vitamin C.
What foods don't make you feel so good?
Dairy, bread, olive oil, citrus, wine, tea, coffee. All my favourites, basically. Oh, and salt. Just realised this recently, and I think it's a big part of my puzzle.
What's your eating schedule look like? Are there certain foods that you prefer at certain times?
I eat what I want - out of what I have in - when I want it. I believe it's better to listen to your body's whispers, than to shout at it via loudhailer about what it 'ought' to like.
In a state of nature, e.g. a peasant or hunter-gatherer community, eating is regulated by both restriction and desire. You can't control what's available - neither the type of food nor the quantity, glut or scarcity. But you have total freedom of choice within those restrictions. I mimic this by randomly choosing source food types within a restricted budget.
What is your favorite nutritious food to eat? Think of something super-healthy, but something that you love.
Oysters - tinned. Haven't tried raw yet. Lots of zinc, which improves appetite - mine is sometimes poor.
P.S. The letter? I'm with Dukka girl. McKeith is pretty standard issue with her advice. I doubt she'd come up with anything you haven't heard (and tried) before.
Thank you for your insight and comments, everybody! I'm gonna have to sit down and take lots of notes. You've given me so much to think about!!! :)
Hi Babe, thanks for the averie style questions link :)
and potatoes per your comment to me, got it.
fave food to eat, healthy or not, is probably broccoli. i know. live on the edge. i love it and eat tons!
xo
More comments for you! I really do love reading your blog.
What is your major ailment?
Chronic headaches
Are you an IBSser?
No. thankfully.
A dieter?
No, I eat a healthy and varied vegetarian diet. I learned how to "diet" when I was 10 years old and it did nothing but teach me that food was the enemy.
Do you suffer trouble with hormones?
Not too much, just run of the mill irritability at PMS time.
When you eat, what part of your body are you looking to heal or help?
Head, liver (issues run in the family), blood sugar levels.
What foods make you feel good?
Anything fresh. and WATER WATER WATER. Wheatgrass shots, too. Prunes and bananas.
What foods don't make you feel so good?
Dairy makes me feel slow and sluggish. Particularly ice cream - can't do it anymore. Raw onions give me instant migraine, brownies give me heartburn and headaches - but i still eat them. ugh.
What's your eating schedule look like? Are there certain foods that you prefer at certain times?
I've always been a grazer. Gotta eat every 3 hours or I turn into, well, not someone you'd want to be around. I try to stick with anney's advice to "eat something green with each meal" but usually the best I can get is to eat something colorful with each meal. Now that I feel the baby, too, I am better about getting a nice variety.
What is your favorite nutritious food to eat? Think of something super-healthy, but something that you love.
Edamame lightly salted. And QUINOA! love it- food of the gods.
Thanks for all the info, Anney!!
Thanks so much for your comments everybody!
Linds - no dairy? are you ovo-vegan? :) quinoa is one of my faves too, as well as the greens. Greens have helped me kick caffeine for good! they are sooo energizing! LOVE THEM!
Wow - keeping to a diet must be tough!!
Hi FG and others, I stumbled upon this blog while I was looking for a food diary template. I am a student dietitian in Australia and recently we had a lecture from a lady called Sue Shepherd who did her phd in IBS and coeliac disease. She has come up with an elimination diet that is based on some different types of carbohydrates that the body sometimes finds difficult to digest in the gut, which causes the symptoms associated with IBS - constipation, diarrhea, bloating, wind, etc. It is called FODMAPS and I think I heard her say that she is taking it over to America soon (she did also say it would be hard because corn syrup is one of the problem foods and it is so entrenched in your food supply!)... if you want to look into it more her website is - http://shepherdworks.com.au and there is a fact sheet on there about FODMAPS if you click 'information fact sheets' across the top.
