Remember When I Used to Write Reviews?

Look! New Larabars!!!

Chorus blaring happy trumpets!!!

Then follow them up with a sad tuba.

Wah-wah-wahhhh...

These did NOT live up to my expectations AT ALL.

First off - they are NOT VEGAN!!! The ingredients come with a warning: The chocolate in this bar may or may not include milk.
Here's the byline for the nutritional info:
  • Made with Fair Trade Certified Chocolate
  • Gluten Free
  • 5g of Fiber
  • ½ Serving of Fruit *
  • *1/4 cup based on USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005

Um... WTF, Lara?

I ate the bars - despite their possible milk consumption. The tiny bit of dairy that COULD be in them wouldn't bother me. And as it turned out, it didn't really matter. The bars really weren't that good.

Chocolate Chip Brownie

The chocolate chip brownie tasted like a chocolate Larabar. There was no "brownie" happening. To be fair - I'm not a fan of the chocolate Larabars anyway.

I like to be punched in the mouth by my chocolate.

Larabars are too friendly.

If you are looking for a date bar with the spirit of a brownie, try these...

Look unfamiliar? That's 'cos they used to look like this...

But I digress...

Back to the bashing.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip

Usually - I love the peanut butter Larabar. For some reason, the peanut butter chocolate chip did nothing for me. It's missing something. I don't know what.

Carrot Cake

The carrot cake did not taste like carrot cake. It tasted like raisins and cloves. There's pineapple in it too. More carrots, please Lara?

This sad bastard didn't even make it completely into my mouth. It fell backwards into the windowsill. I let it stay there for a minute. Then I threw it out.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
The chocolate chip cookie dough?

I LOVED IT.

It's the regular cashew cookie bar mixed with chocolate chips. It tasted like chocolate chip cookie dough. It rocked.

When it comes to Larabars, everyone has their faves. Some people swear by the cherry pie. I'm like - Yuck! Peanut butter and cashew cookie all the way! Ginger's good in the winter time. Coconut is like dessert! The rest are... whatev. Most of us foodies would rather make our own!

SO! Don't take my word for it! Give these a try yourself.

What about you?

Have you tried the new bars? What are your faves?

Are there any other date bars you kick it with?

I won some from Larabar's website and have been waiting for them to arrive!

Another blogger I read was freaked out by the "may contain milk" but I read that as "may be processed in the same facility as" but not the same as "ACTUALLY FOR REAL SERIOUSLY CONTAINS MILK" - I recognize that for people with severe food allergies, that blurred line really should not be crossed, but as someone who has lactose intolerance with mostly vegan leanings, I look to the "CONTAINS" instead of the "MAY CONTAIN" because I've read them to be two different things.

But! I digress! I am saddened to see that they aren't all that great. I make some great fudgy date bars, and I don't really like their chocolate flavor bars anyway (Chocolate Coconut Chew? Blech!) but I was excited for Carrot Cake. Sad. Speaking of, have you made Ani Phyo's Raw Carrot Cake with 'Cream Cheese' Frosting cupcakes from her dessert book? They are amazing, and sort of what I hoped these would taste like.

I hope mine come in today. I want them!

Hmmm, I'm still kinda tempted to try the carrot cake though I'm sure the sugar grams are appalling. I'm one of those who LOVES the Cherry Pie. Thanks for the review!

really? "may or may not contain milk" ?!
if you make the product, you should know if something is in it or not. }:( <----sideways angry face.
*sigh*
why must standards always decrease? why you, Lara, why you!!?

Kelli - I discovered the GM when I went to the site TODAY!!! I had NO idea they were part of a corp!!! Thank Gosh I buy them only in a pinch. Once I'm out of my parents' place and working a real job, I will be 100% less packaged in my eats. What we make is always better anyway! :)

Heather - yeah, that's what I'm thinking. We make much better stuff by ourselves. It's fresh. Plus we can season and flavor it any way we want! :)

I have only tried a few Larabars and I haven't been impressed. I hated the ginger and the apple pie. ICK! But I have heard really good things about the cookie dough flavor so I might have to try that one when I find it. Until then...eh...not so impressed!

I much preferred the now extinct cliff nectar bars. The chocolate walnut in particular. Just thinking about it makes me depressed, and I think the whole bar obsession is annoying.

This is good to know. We do the bar thing when we travel, but for the most part we just don't. I like a good review and you definitely gave one!

We are not Larabar lovers. We think they are just alright, but we are not really bar people to begin with. They get boring to us. Maybe it is just us and our weird eating ways, haha.

Nicely done! I believe a cookie dough bar is in my very near future. I've actually been looking for a new GF, DF snack bar to keep me going at work... thanks for the honest and enlightening review session ;-)
