I ate ice cream for breakfast this morning!!! Anyone else?
Most people eat ice cream on birthdays and holidays. I eat it when I'm sick.
Sugary foods eff me up so bad. Either they run me down when I'm trying to work out, or they keep me awake with heart palpitations at night.
The only time I can afford to eat junk is when I can go nowhere and do nothing.
The Phantom Flu started when I showed up at my boyfriend's last Friday. It was his birthday. He was very very very sick.
Upon seeing him, I jumped back into my car and took off. NOT!!! It was his birthday! I ran to our local health food store. Over my shoulder, I cried: "It's not taking us without a fight!"
Here's what I bought for the great battle.
Echinacea Tincture
Coconut water (duh)
My favorite greens formula
My boyfriend eats VERY healthy. BUT he's not a psycho like me. Still - he really liked the green juices I made for him, mixing up the macro greens and the coconut water. On Monday, he texted me from work. "I want more green coconut water!" He said.

I LOVE when people I love love the tasty healthy food that I LOVE!!!
Sooo... back to the Phantom Flu. Did we win? Yes and no. I think I created a monster.
Friday, he was sick.
By Saturday, he felt completely better.
By Sunday, he was back in bed, feverish, and sleeping again.
My sickness started on Monday. It made me feel out of it, but not so out of it that I couldn't go to work on Tuesday. By Tuesday evening, I was in bed moaning. Wednesday? Bouncing back. Thursday. Out of it. Again.
See? Phantom Flu.
Halfway through the week, I went back to the health food store. I bought some more stuff - some health Nazi cold fighters - just for myself.
Raw Garlic and Tomato Juice
Women's Simply One
Probiotics and Spicy Foods!!!!
This was the best salad I've had in a long time!!!
I drank two boxes of tea!!!

For years, I've stood by Gypsy Cold Care, but I have to admit, I LOVE the peppery goodness of Yogi Cold Season tea.
Of course, neither one compares to my own brand, Beacon Tea!!!
Phantom Flu Slayer
Cinnamon
Ginger
Tumeric
Chili Powder
Cayenne
Raw Honey
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup almond milk
Ginger
Tumeric
Chili Powder
Cayenne
Raw Honey
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup almond milk
In the end - was it smart to crimefight the Phantom Flu?
Yes and no.
Echinacea and greens can only do so much. The illness still came for me. But it took only a part of me with it. This can be a good or bad thing.
To anyone who saw me this week, I didn't look sick at all. I had no runny nose, no cough, no chapped voice. But I felt HORRIBLE. I was nauseous. I had a headache. Every swallow felt like I was swallowing glass!
Sometimes, I wondered if it would've been better to just surrender!
Toots

This blasted phantom flu sounds like what I'm battling, ugh! I hope you feel better soon. I've been working so much on the gosh darn pumpkin patch this past week that I didn't really have time to feel the fullness of whatever it is my body is fighting until today. Ick.
Anyway, this is what works for me: apple cider vinegar (3 tsp) + raw garlic, finely chopped (1-2 cloves) + honey, all mixed together in a glass of hot or cold water... mmm! I also down Kyolic Garlic pills and Vitamin C like crazy.
However, I must note that while this combo usually makes my immune system invincible, it doesn't seem to be working as well this time around. Hmm... Does my body need to build specialized Seattle antibodies, perhaps?
i take cold fx when i feel a cold coming..i think it works quite well
I think once you've got a cold/flu, you've got it. The immune system has let it in, it's probably a bit late to start strengthening it in the middle of an illness, and let's face it, even the strongest, most well supported immune system will let the occasional bug in. But there are plenty of great ways to soothe the symptoms. I've never had flu, but for the cold, I steam with eucalyptus, drink plenty of tea and sometimes make a hot curry. Hope you're feeling better soon!
sleep, sleep, and more sleep! my man also gives me echinacea, goldenseal, elderberry, and colloidal silver when i'm not feeling well.
it seems like a lot of people have been battling something. i've had a cough for over a month but have been feeling ok. hope you feel better soon!
I had a super sore throat and a stuffed nose and i lived on ice cream. My sister thought it was crazy but my throat loved every minute of it. It was gone for a week but now it's back :( guess it's time for ice cream again
Wow! It sounds like the Phantom Flu has been flying from coast to coast!!! I hope you ladies all feel better soon!
Sax - I totally meant to try your elixir when I got sick again, and I forgot! D'oh!
Eimear - true dat about the stayingness of flus. I've read recently that a lot of immunity boosters work as great cold fighters too!
Kelli - Sleep is such a lovely place... I wish I visited there more often!!! Smart girl! :)
I hardly ever get a nick in my armor but when I do, I take Emergen-C or, if it's pomegranate season, I attack with that.
My grandmother always recommended garlic tea but I couldn't stomach it...
I hope you feel better soon!!
I had me some kraut too today...so good!!
I have had that probiotic hummus before and loved it, but I have not seen in up here in NC yet. : (

Not sure about how strict you are with your veganism, but I used to use that brand of multivitamin until I found out that it has vitamin D3 in it, which comes from sheep. Thought you should know just in case. Feel better!
Sorry to hear that you got the darned flu, too! It went around here and both my husband and I got it. I RARELY get sick. At the first signs of throat soreness I dosed up on oregano oil, garlic, water, broth, etc. but it took hold this time and stuck. I was so mad!
You ask what do people do when they get sick? As much as I hate a temperature, I let it ride out because it's the only thing that zaps the virus. It was so painful my gums hurt, but afterward I felt like Super Woman.
Thanks for sharing your goodies!
