Christmas Hot and Cold

Merry Christmas!!!!

I am sick! Again. For the third time this season.

I don't know what's wrong with my ass! I drink green juice. I drink echinacea and elderflower tea. I drink massive amounts of kombucha! I don't get it!

This time, I stopped the cold dead in it's tracks. By the third day, it's about gone. It started as a sore throat and just kinda stayed there. No development, whatsoever. Weird, huh?

Anyone else ever have a cold that didn't move?

Every time I get sick, I try new stuff. Farts aside - colds are the second bane of my busy existence. So I have to share what works and what doesn't.

New Chapter Sinus and Respiratory

A friend told me that this stuff kicked the crap out of her cold. I started taking it on Christmas eve - when my sister told me she wasn't feeling well. It has every single immunity and cold-fighting herb wrapped up inside it. Considering I haven't tried it before, I definitely think it was a big help in fighting this weird throat cold.

Herby Throat Chews!

I made these yesterday. They are based on a recipe from Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal. I took equal parts almond butter and raw honey, mixed them into a dough with throat healthy herb powders. Then I stuck them in a tupperware out in the garage to chill.

My local store carries marshmallow, slippery elm, and rose hip powder. So that's what I used! Marshmallow and slippery elm are mucilaginous... coating and soothing the throat. Rose hips are full of Vitamin C. Rosemary's original recipe calls for licorice root powder - and I would've preferred that to the rose hip. But even without, they are tasty and make my throat feel better!

Other than the throat-trapped cold, I had a very magical holiday season!

I got to take part in my first winter solstice ritual! Friends got together in a big field under the full moon, and lit candles for the upcoming growing season. It was beautiful!!! This is me and my boyfriend (aka Satan) hanging out by the bonfire afterwards. We were warming our giblets!

I got a dehydrator! The boyfriend spoiled me big time. The Nesco is cheaper than the Excalibur, by about $150 bucks, and according to reviews, works just as well. I am making kale chips and raw crackers today! I will let you know!

Ironically - I got my boyfriend a humidifier for Christmas. So he got me a dehydrator and I got him a hydrator! We disagree about the uses of water. HA!

From Mom and Dad, I got a really awesome set of knives! Check out the sharpener!!!

From my pals at Go Indie, I got a 3-day kombucha maker! Review to come!

I also got A NEW JOB!!!

Last semester, I lived the life of a nomad. I taught at schools that were an hour and a half from my home. I also traveled to my boyfriend, who lives an hour from my home. On a weekly basis, I was traveling seven-eight hours a week.

Next semester, I will be teaching at a state school. State schools pay enough for adjuncts to work solely there. So! No traveling! This place is twenty minutes from my home. However, I plan on moving into town and riding my bike to class every day.

An old school pic of me and my bike, in Cambridge, MA.

This new job was the best Christmas present ever... probably of my entire life!

I am finally moving out of my parents' house, where I've lived since moving home to Philly from Boston, two years ago. Look forward to new raw food posts and new apartment posts!

Now, I know Christmas is not all about presents. But man, presents do make it pretty awesome!!! Especially when they are foodie presents that contribute to health and wellness!

Toots

How was your holiday?

What good stuff did you get?

What good stuff did you eat?

What are your plans for New Years?

Congrats on your new job! As a fellow IBS-C sufferer, will a move like this cause you stress and therefore more flareups? I am asking this as I just dealt with my mother-in-law at the house for the holidays...I did ok, but not great.

Aw! Any sort of disruption in your homelife can definitely cause flareups! Doing ok is good!

For me, the move will be WONDERFUL. I'm much more stressed in my parents' crowded house. It will be a great relief of my IBS.

Thanks for asking! I hope the rest of your holidays calm down a bit! :)

Awwww your Christmas sounds wonderful (Christmas the only time I overuse wonderful). Congrats on the job and I hope the cold stays away. I've had 1 cold so far but allergies suck.

Congrats on the new job - I'll be starting my first job as a prof. next fall in the Philly area! I'm super pumped! Have a marvelous new year!

P.S. I would love to have a dehydrator! Lucky you :)

Also - turnips are very high in vitamin C and I find them very soothing (though they can be toot producing). They might be good for fending off future colds and they're super yummy! In the winter, I just boil them in a little salted water and eat them for breakfast.

Ashlie - congrats on the new job! Email me if I can help in any way... teaching in Philly can be rough. Thanks for the turnip idea! I'm starting to get tired of squash and sweet pots for brekkie!

I think Elise has some fancy schmancy cold chasing concoction she makes. I get those colds all the time; the ones that start and then just linger but never get worse. My neti pot helps me a lot on those days though.

Happy holidays, my dear! Congrats on all those great presents...good knives are the best thing ever!

I just wanted to say I am SO glad I stumbled upon your blog today.
For one congrats on the job and it sounds like you had a beautiful christmas.

I was recently diagnosed [finally] with both of the conditions you have so any tip could help :D
Thanks.

Yes Iris! She does. She's posted it at least twice... and I have yet to try it... it's lemon, applecider vinegar, garlic... something like that... I need to get on it!

Hey Aleyna! Nice to meet you! I definitely need to get back into writing about IBS! You have inspired me! :)

Dehydrator...I'm drooling! I feel like I can't ask for one for a while though since the hubby gave in and finally bought the Vitamix for my birthday this year. Can't wait to hear how you're loving it!

You may try Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa (ninjiom-hk.cwahi.net). i know alot of people use it, its also non alcoholic, though it's effectiveness is not as good as alcohol based cough medicine, but it's still good to use on not so serious scratchy throat.
